How to use it

  1. Type the registration mark in the box. The spacing is set for you, as it would be on the road.
  2. Choose one of the 192 cars. Each is photographed straight on, so you see the front number plate as other drivers will.
  3. Use the magnifier on the photograph for a close look at the characters.

What you are looking at

A front number plate is white with black characters; the rear is yellow. The characters are the Charles Wright typeface every UK number plate must use, at the legal height, width and spacing, so what you see here is how the registration mark will read on the car. Our guide to what makes a number plate road legal explains the rules, and number plate sizes covers the other shapes a vehicle can carry.

Questions

Is the number plate viewer free?

Yes. It is free and needs no account, and it shows any registration mark, whether or not it is for sale here.

Can I see a private plate on my own car?

Choose your make and model from the 192 cars, or search for it by name. Each is photographed straight on, so the front number plate reads as other drivers will see it.

Does it show the rear number plate?

It shows the front, which is white with black characters. The rear number plate carries the same characters on yellow.

Is what I see road legal?

The characters are drawn in the Charles Wright typeface at the legal size and spacing. Whether a registration mark can go on your vehicle also depends on its age, because a mark can never make a vehicle look newer than it is.

Can I save or share the picture?

Yes. Under the photograph you can save it to your account or this device, copy a link, or send it by WhatsApp or email.

To check how old a registration mark is, and so the oldest vehicle it can go on, use the checker in our guide to number plate years.

Found the one?

Search private plates by name, initials or word, or browse private plates by initials, current style and prefix registration marks. Every registration mark’s own page shows it on a car too. If you already own a registration mark, you can buy number plates for it, made to British Standard BS AU 145e.
