Search current style private plates only
Two area letters, a two digit age identifier, then three letters. Issued since 2001, and the style still being made.
This page searches this one style only. If nothing here suits, search every style and we will show what else carries the same letters.
What a current-style registration mark is made of
- Area letters
- The first two. They record where the registration mark was first issued. I, Q and Z are never used here.
- Age identifier
- The two digits in the middle. This is the part that sets the age, and it changes twice a year.
- Letters
- Three at the end, chosen at random, and where most of the meaning in a current style registration mark comes from. I and Q are not used, but Z is, which is why it can appear at the end of a registration mark and never at the front.
Will it fit my vehicle?
A current style registration mark can only go on a vehicle first registered in the period of its identifier or later.
How does the age identifier work?
A new one arrives on 1 March and another on 1 Sept. The March one is the year: 26 for March 2026. The Sept. one is the year plus fifty: 76 for Sept. 2026. Marks go on sale six weeks before their release, which is why one can be bought before it can be put on a vehicle.
Can you buy one ahead of its release?
A registration mark released in Feb. cannot be assigned to a vehicle until 1 March of the same year, and one released in Aug. not until 1 Sept. You can buy it in the meantime; it simply waits on the certificate.
How must the characters be spaced?
Every number plate we make complies with British Standard BS AU 145e. On a standard modern car number plate, characters are 79mm tall and 50mm wide, with prescribed spacing of 11mm between characters and 33mm between the two groups. The registration must not be rearranged or deliberately respaced to make it read as something else. An illegally displayed registration can fail an MOT and lead to a fine of up to £1,000.00.
What makes a number plate legal sets out the measurements in full, and private plate styles shows every style side by side.
