Sell a private plate

Want to know what your private plate could be worth? Enter the registration mark below and we will give you a free valuation, with no obligation.

Or just send it over

Send it over and we will come back to you. Whether it is on a vehicle or on a V750 certificate, either is fine.

What a valuation costs

Nothing. There is no charge for the figure and no obligation to sell once you have it. We aim to be in touch within 48 hours.

What selling costs

Our 10% is added to your figure, not taken out of it. You receive the price we agree with you. Where a buyer will not pay the full 10% on top, it comes out of our end rather than yours, and if it never sells there is nothing to pay at all. The higher the price, the better we do out of it, so there is no version of this in which it suits us to take the first offer that comes along.

How long it takes

Nobody can honestly put a figure on it. A private plate can sell in a few weeks, or sit a good deal longer while the right buyer comes along. What we can tell you is what happens in between. Your registration mark is compared against everybody already waiting for one like it, and if nobody waiting is right for it, it goes up on newreg.co.uk, the same company under a different name.

Selling it to us outright

Some registration marks we buy ourselves rather than find a buyer for. A private plate scoring above 85 on our own score is considered for that, and where we do buy, the purchase is completed within four weeks.

How the answer reaches you

Ask from your account and choose how you would like the reply: email, WhatsApp or text. We take a request only where we hold details to answer on, and only from somebody who holds the seller’s details and the authority to ask.

If the private plate is on a vehicle

A registration mark that is on a vehicle has to come off it before it can go anywhere else. It comes off on to a V750 certificate in your name, and the same conditions the DVLA sets apply coming off a vehicle as going on to one.

If it is already on a certificate

A private plate on a certificate is held in your name until it is assigned to a vehicle, and has to be renewed before the certificate expires. Let it lapse and it goes back to the DVLA. Once it has gone back it cannot be recovered.

What yours might be worth

We will value what you hold and find it a buyer. Before you ask, the score gives you a reading of your own in a few seconds, and the value studies show what marks of the same shape have actually sold for.

Score your private plate out of 100 on screen, transfers and retention explains what has to happen to the registration mark itself, private plates as an investment says what nobody can promise, and the prefix value study shows what has sold.
