Ask about private plates

Ask in your own words. This covers what fits which vehicle, the styles and year letters, transfers and certificates, what a number plate may legally look like, and how digits read as letters.

Answers come from this site’s own guides, and it can run the private plate search to tell you what is held and what it costs. For anything that turns on the law, the guides and gov.uk come first.

Will a 26 private plate fit my 2015 car?

No. A dated registration mark can go on a vehicle first registered when that mark was issued or later, and never earlier, because a registration mark must not make a vehicle look newer than it is. The 26 identifier belongs to registrations issued from Sept. 2026, so it cannot go on a car first registered in 2015. A dateless or Northern Irish registration mark carries no year at all and fits a vehicle of any age. Read more.

What does the £80.00 fee cover?

The DVLA charges £80.00 to assign a registration mark to a vehicle and keeps the whole of it. It is compulsory and it is already inside the price you pay here. Search results leave it out unless you switch the price shown to include it; your basket and your order summary always include it and show it separately, so you can see what the price is made of. Nothing is added at the payment screen. Read more.

Can I keep my current registration?

Yes, if you ask before the new one goes on. When a private plate is assigned to a vehicle, the registration mark it was wearing goes back to the DVLA unless you ask to keep it. If you are applying to DVLA Swansea yourself, say so on the application and the DVLA puts it on a certificate in your name. If we are assigning it for you, tell us before we start and we will ask on your behalf. Once it has gone back it cannot be recovered. Read more.

How do digits read as letters?

On a registration mark 0 reads as O, 1 as I, 2 as Z, 3 as E, 4 as A, 5 as S, 6 as G, 7 as T, 8 as B and 9 as G. Four of them are read two ways depending on the word: 0 can be D, 1 can be L, 2 can be R and 6 can be B. Every private plate on this site says which of its characters are real letters and which are digits standing in for them, so you can see how it reads before you buy it. Read more.
