How to use it

  1. Type the registration mark in the box. The spacing is set for you, as it would be on the road.
  2. Choose one of the 62 cars. Each is photographed straight on, so you see the front number plate as other drivers will.
  3. Use the magnifier on the photograph for a close look at the characters.

What you are looking at

A front number plate is white with black characters; the rear is yellow. The characters are the Charles Wright typeface every UK number plate must use, at the legal height, width and spacing, so what you see here is how the registration mark will read on the car. Our guide to what makes a number plate road legal explains the rules, and number plate sizes covers the other shapes a vehicle can carry.

Found the one?

Search private plates by name, initials or word, or browse private plates by initials, current style and prefix registration marks. Every registration mark’s own page shows it on a car too. If you already own a registration mark, you can buy number plates for it, made to British Standard BS AU 145e.
