DVLA auction calculator: what you would really pay
The winning bid leaves out three charges: 20 per cent VAT on the bid, a 3 per cent buyer’s premium with VAT on it, and the £80.00 assignment fee. A winning bid of £1,000.00 costs £1,316.00 in all. Type the bid you have in mind to see what you would pay, or the most you want to pay in all to see the winning bid that matches it.
The fees for common bids and budgets, worked out, are on our DVLA auction calculator page.
How the picks are made, and how often they have been right
The model learns from every lot sold at a DVLA auction since Jan. 2025 how the winning bid went with what was known before bidding started: the DVLA’s starting price, our score for the registration, what registrations with the same letters fetched before, the number of digits and the style. It then puts the coming auction’s lots in order. It gives an order, never a price, and it is not advice on what to bid.
We test it the honest way: for each of the last 4 auctions, trained only on the auctions before it, then compared with what really sold.
| Auction | In the top 20 | In the top 100 |
|---|---|---|
| June 2026 | 6 of 20 | 15 of 20 |
| July 2026 | 7 of 20 | 14 of 20 |
| Sept. 2026 | 4 of 20 | 15 of 20 |
| Oct. 2026 | 5 of 20 | 17 of 20 |
On average 5.5 of the 20 finished in the real top 20 and 15.3 in the top 100. Prices at the very top turn on two or three determined bidders, which no model can see coming.
Questions
How are the 20 lots chosen?
A model trained on every DVLA auction since Jan. 2025 learns how the starting price, our score for a registration, what the same letters fetched before, the number of digits and the style went with the winning bid. It then puts the coming auction’s lots in order.
Why is there no predicted price?
Because there are too many variables. A prediction is an order, not a valuation, and we never tell anyone what to bid.
How often have the picks been right?
Each set of 20 is tested on the four auctions before it, using only what was known before each one, and the page gives how many finished in the real top 20 and top 100. After each auction the outcome is added here, whatever it shows.
What does it cost to win one?
The winning bid plus 20 per cent VAT, a 3 per cent buyer’s premium with VAT on it, and the £80.00 assignment fee. The calculator on this page works it out both ways.
