What the work is

He describes his specialism as autonumerology: the study of how letters, numbers, sounds, shapes, names, cars and cultural references combine to create desire in a private plate. It sounds like a coined word because it is one, and it exists because no existing word covered the job. Valuing a private plate is not a lookup. It is a judgement about how many people will read the same seven characters the same way, and how badly one of them will want to.

The method pairs that judgement with evidence: achieved prices on a consistent basis, kept apart from asking prices, and checked for later resale wherever a public record exists.

Recognition

Appointed OBE in the 2013 New Year Honours for services to employment and the community in Lancashire, and invested at Buckingham Palace by The Princess Royal.

Overall United Kingdom winner of EY Entrepreneur of the Year 2019, and winner of its Societal Impact category. He represented the United Kingdom at the EY World Entrepreneur of the Year in 2020.

He founded Recycling Lives, which won four Queen’s Awards for Enterprise under him, in 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2019, and he left it in 2020. In 2026 Car.co.uk, also run by New Reg Limited, won the King’s Award for Enterprise for Innovation.

Honorary Fellow of the University of Central Lancashire, conferred in Dec. 2011. None of that decides what a private plate is worth, but it is the commercial record behind the analysis.
