Cheap private plates: how to pay less for one that means something

A private plate does not have to be expensive to be personal. Ours start at £174.80, including VAT and the £80.00 DVLA assignment fee, and the difference between that and a five-figure price is almost never the meaning to you. It is how many other people would want the same letters.

Some of our least expensive private plates today, at the full price including VAT and the £80.00 DVLA assignment fee.

What makes one private plate cost more than another

Every registration mark on sale is unique, so its price is set by demand rather than by what it cost to make. Four things push it up:

Take those away and you are left with a private plate that means as much to you as any other, at a fraction of the price.

How to find a cheap private plate

  1. Search your initials. Your three initials at the end of a current-style registration, such as AB12 CDE, are among the most affordable ways to make a car yours.
  2. Accept a longer number. A prefix registration with a two- or three-digit number costs much less than the same letters with a 1.
  3. Look past the popular first letters. The two letters at the front of a current-style registration change the price. Our search shows the private plates ending in your letters, from A to Z.
  4. Set your budget. The price control on any results page hides everything above the figure you choose.
  5. Add your vehicle. Enter your current registration mark and we remove anything your car is too old to carry, so you only compare registrations you can use.

What the price includes

The price you see before you order is the full price of the private plate. It includes VAT and the compulsory £80.00 DVLA assignment fee, delivery of your V750 certificate is free, and nothing is added at the checkout. If you would like us to assign it to your vehicle for you, that optional service is £20.00. Number plates are sold separately and priced before you order. Our prices and fees page sets out every figure.

When you compare prices elsewhere, check whether VAT and the £80.00 fee are included. A price that leaves them out can look £100.00 or more cheaper than it is.

Make sure it fits your car

A registration mark can never make a vehicle look newer than it is. A prefix or current-style private plate can only go on a vehicle first registered on or after the date its year letter or age identifier was issued. A Northern Irish private plate carries no year, so it fits a vehicle of any age. Our guide to age restrictions explains the rule.

No. You can order the private plate on its own. Physical number plates are available separately, and their price is shown before you order.

Is a cheap private plate a good investment?

We do not give investment advice. Most people buy a private plate because it means something to them. Values depend on the complete registration mark and on demand, and a lower price usually reflects a smaller pool of likely buyers.

How buying works, private plates with your initials and the styles of registration mark cover the rest.
