Private Plates for everyone

Ordering a private plate

When you order a private plate, you are ordering the right to use a unique registration mark, which is yours once we have secured it, not the physical number plates themselves. Every price on this site includes the DVLA’s £80.00 assignment fee. If you would like physical number plates made, these are available separately and the cost will be shown before you order.

We handle the application for you. Your V750 certificate will name you as the person entitled to assign the private plate to a vehicle straight away or keep it on the certificate until you are ready. Most transfers are completed within a couple of weeks.

Cheaper than the DVLA

Every registration the DVLA also offers is priced £1.00 below the DVLA’s own published price for the same mark, with VAT and the £80.00 DVLA assignment fee included on both sides (checked on 16 Oct. 2026). Nothing else is compulsory: assign the registration yourself at no further cost, and your certificate arrives exactly as the DVLA would issue it.

Number plates, our assignment service and faster post are optional extras the DVLA does not offer, each priced before you order. See how our prices compare.

Which style fits your vehicle

Current style
Two area letters, a two digit age identifier, then three letters. Issued since 2001, and the style still being made.
Prefix
A year letter at the front, then numbers and three letters. Issued from 1983 to 2001.
Northern Irish
Three letters carrying an I or a Z, then up to four numbers. No year code, so it fits a vehicle of any age, anywhere in the UK.
Suffix
Three letters, then numbers, with the year letter at the end. Issued from 1963 to 1983. (Visit newreg.co.uk to buy this style.)
Dateless
No year code at all, so a dateless registration mark fits a vehicle of any age. The oldest style, and usually the dearest. (Visit newreg.co.uk to buy this style.)

A registration mark must never make a vehicle look newer than it is, so a dated one can only go on a vehicle first registered on or after the day its identifier came in. A dateless or Northern Irish registration mark carries no age at all and fits any vehicle. Number plate rules and the law, and age restrictions explained.
