UK new car registrations hit best September since 2017

The UK new car market recorded its best September since 2017, with preliminary figures showing registrations rising by more than 12% compared with the same month a year earlier, according to a trade report published this week.
September is the most closely watched month in the UK car calendar because it brings a new number plate suffix, and the volume of cars registered directly shapes which plates enter circulation. A stronger September typically means more vehicles carrying the new plate identifier on the road, which in turn affects the supply of dateless and cherished marks that owners hold as alternatives.
The report attributes the growth not primarily to a surge in consumer wealth but to intense competition among manufacturers, including newer entrants to the market, which has expanded buyer choice and made new cars more accessible to people who might otherwise have opted for used vehicles. Improved consumer confidence and GDP growth that has proved more resilient than expected are also cited as contributing factors.
For anyone who already holds a private registration, a buoyant new car market is worth watching. When more vehicles are registered, the DVLA issues more standard plates, which can shift attention towards personalised marks that carry meaning no sequential issue ever could. The underlying figures remain preliminary and have not yet been confirmed by official sources, so the final picture may differ slightly from the numbers reported today.
