Number plates fetch thousands as cyber attacks hit small firms

16 Sept. 2026 · Steven Jackson OBE, Founder, New Reg Limited

A trade report published on 16 September notes that more than a third of small UK businesses were affected by a cyber attack over the past year, with nearly two in five firms reporting an incident, a figure that underlines how exposed smaller operators have become to digital threats.

For owners of cherished registrations, the finding is a practical prompt. A personalised plate is a financial asset, and the account or records associated with it deserve the same protection as any other valuable. Weak passwords, shared log-ins and unpatched software are the most common entry points cited in such reports, and any account that holds proof of ownership or transfer history is worth reviewing.

The same report also flags that personalised number plates are fetching thousands of pounds, reinforcing what many owners already suspect: a well-chosen mark can hold or grow its value over time. No specific plates or sale prices are named in the source material beyond that general observation.

Volvo is separately reported to have updated its XC60 and XC90 models, though the report provides no further detail on the nature of those changes. Owners of private registrations assigned to either model should ensure their V5C reflects the correct vehicle details before any transfer or retention is arranged, as discrepancies can delay DVLA processing.
