Northern Ireland parking rules now require your reg at the machine

2 Oct. 2026 · Steven Jackson OBE, Founder, New Reg Limited

Drivers in Northern Ireland who use on-street pay and display parking will soon be required to enter their vehicle registration mark (VRM) at the machine when buying a parking session, under a rule that comes into operation on 24 October 2026.

The Department for Infrastructure has made a Statutory Rule, cited as S.R. 2026 No. 167, which amends the On-Street Parking Order (Northern Ireland) 2000. The core change ties each parking payment to a specific vehicle by making it compulsory to input the registration mark at the point of purchase, something that was not previously a requirement under the 2000 Order.

The same rule also allows drivers to pay through cashless applications that have been approved by the Department, providing a digital alternative to the traditional pay and display machine. Both the machine-based and app-based methods are covered by the same obligation to link the payment to a particular registration mark.

For anyone who holds a personalised or cherished registration, the practical effect is straightforward: whichever registration mark is currently assigned to and displayed on the vehicle is the one that must be entered when paying for parking in the affected areas. Using the wrong mark, or leaving the field blank, could leave the vehicle without valid evidence of payment. According to a trade report, the rule has been published and a copy can be inspected at DfI offices by appointment during standard weekday office hours.
