Chinese car brands post sharp sales rises in August
4 Sept. 2026 · Updated 2 Oct. 2026 · Philip Ridsdale, Head of Sales, New Reg Limited
Chinese car brands recorded some of the sharpest registration growth in the UK new car market in August, according to a trade report citing official industry data. Chery led the rise, growing from 13 units sold in the same month a year earlier to 2,380, while Leapmotor posted a 550 per cent increase to reach 965 registrations for the month.
For anyone holding a cherished plate currently assigned to a Chinese-branded vehicle, or considering one for a new purchase, the figures are a reminder that the market for these cars is moving quickly. A private registration retains its value independently of the car it sits on, but the resale appeal of a plate can be influenced by the profile of marques buyers are actively searching out.
Xpeng was also named among the fastest-growing new brands in August, though the trade report notes further detail about the brand's figures is pending. All three marques are described as dominating the fastest-growing segment among new brands for the month.
The data comes from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders and covers the August registration period. The figures have been reported by a single trade source and have not yet been independently corroborated, so they should be treated as indicative until further confirmation is available.
