BYD hits 100,000 UK registrations three years after launch

18 Aug. 2026 · Philip Ridsdale, Head of Sales, New Reg Limited

BYD has registered 100,000 passenger cars in Britain in roughly three years, having only begun selling here in March 2023, according to a trade report. That is a notable milestone for any brand, but it carries a particular meaning for anyone who owns or is considering a personalised registration: a fast-growing marque with a large and expanding owner base creates fresh demand for plates that reflect the brand, its models or simply the owner's identity.

For existing BYD owners, the growth of the brand in the UK means their cars are becoming an increasingly familiar sight on British roads. A private registration is one straightforward way to set a vehicle apart from the crowd as the marque becomes more common, and the same principle applies whether the car is electric or otherwise.

It is worth noting that this report comes from a single trade source and has not yet been independently confirmed. The 100,000 figure and the March 2023 start date are as stated in that source, and no official body has published a corresponding confirmation at the time of writing.

If you own a BYD and are thinking about a personalised plate, or if you already hold a cherished registration and want to know what it is worth, PrivatePlates.co.uk sells personalised registrations, manages all the DVLA paperwork from start to finish, produces road-legal plates to British Standard, and can also value and sell a registration on your behalf.
