Cancellation & refunds
An order has parts, and they cancel differently. Each is set out below.

The private plate
When you order, you ask us to begin straight away, because reserving a private plate is what stops somebody else buying it. You tick a box saying so, and saying that you understand what it means.
Before the registration mark is secured you can cancel at any time, and we refund your payment in full.
Once the registration mark has been secured for you it cannot be cancelled. The documentation has been processed, and the registration mark is reserved and personal to you: it is not stock we can put back on a shelf.
If you wish to cancel once it has been secured, tell us in writing. For a fee of £50.00 including VAT we process the cancellation: we refund any parts of your order that have not been fulfilled, such as postage or the £80.00 DVLA fee where it can be reclaimed, and we send one communication to the DVLA asking for the documentation to be cancelled and a full refund issued. We do not enter into protracted correspondence with the DVLA; that one communication is included in the £50.00 fee. Anything that is not refunded is not refunded because the product or service is personalised to you and outside the cancellation rights.
The £80.00 DVLA fee
This is inside the price you paid. It is a compulsory fee set by the DVLA, not ours, and we do not keep it. If your order does not complete, or if you later decide not to renew your certificate, we reclaim it and can return it to you.
The number plates
Number plates are made to carry one registration mark and nothing else, in the design you chose, and we start making them as soon as the identity checks the law requires are complete. Goods made to your specification and clearly personalised are an exception to the right to change your mind, so once they have been manufactured they are personal to you and cannot be cancelled or returned.
If they arrive faulty, damaged or not as described, that is a different matter and your rights are unaffected. Tell us and we will put it right.
So a cancellation may return part of what you paid
That is the practical result of the three answers above, and it is why your basket and your order set the parts out separately. You see which is which before you order rather than afterwards.
Where you get everything back
If we cannot submit your application within 12 weeks and the delay is not your fault, you get a full refund of everything not yet performed.
If your own vehicle turns out not to meet the DVLA’s requirements for the registration mark, you get a full refund of every part of your order not yet performed, and we reclaim and return the £80.00 DVLA fee.
If the private plate turns out to be unavailable before we secure it, you get a full refund and we will help you find another.
Refunds reach you within 5 to 7 working days, depending on your bank.
If you change your mind after that
We cannot refund a private plate that is already yours, but we can help. We will advertise and re-sell it for you at a reduced rate, and you keep the proceeds of the sale.
A note on older guidance
You may see other sites referring to seven working days. That came from the Distance Selling Regulations 2000, which were replaced in 2014. The rules that apply now are the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013.
Your legal rights
None of this affects your statutory rights, including your rights if something we supply is faulty or not as described. If something has gone wrong, our complaints procedure sets out what we will do about it. The full wording is in clause 6 of our terms and conditions.
